Bone Density Testing
“Peak bone mass” for, both, men and women occurs in the third decade of life. After that, bone mass steadily decreases and, in some people, the risk of osteoporosis gradually increases.
A bone density test uses specialized X-ray equipment to measure the strength and density of bones such as the hip, hand, foot or spine. It is commonly used to screen for osteoporosis.
A bone density scan determine low bone density before a painful or life-threatening fracture occurs, and it helps predict your risk of bone fracture.
If you and your doctor decide to treat your osteoporosis, bone density testing will help determine how well the treatment is working over time.
The test is painless and exposes patients to only a small amount of radiation. It is conducted on-site at the Family Medical Center.
