Hearing Evaluation
Your doctor may want to test your ability to differentiate between various frequencies that make up our world of sound.
Hearing impairment may occur at birth or develop over the course of a lifetime. Serious infections such as meningitis or head injuries can also cause loss of hearing.
Disorders in the middle ear are easily detected by a tympanogram. This procedure is common for children, and it is not painful. It works by varying the pressure within the ear canal and measuring the movement of the ear drum (the tympanic membrane).
In adults, hearing loss may result from tumors, exposure to noise, trauma or the aging process itself. This impairment may or may not be accompanied by tinnitus – ringing in the ears. Tinnitus may occur by itself without any hearing loss.
A variety of on-site hearing tests for children and adults are available when you visit the Family Medical Center.
