Ultrasound
Ultrasound can give expectant parents a window into the growing world of their unborn baby.
A common diagnostic procedure in pregnancy, ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to "echo," or bounce, off the body and create a picture.
In the procedure, a special lubricant is applied to the skin of the expectant mother's abdomen as a wand-like instrument (called a transducer) is positioned over it. Sound waves are generated and reflected back as electric impulses resulting in an image of the baby on a computer screen.
Usually performed between 18 and 20 weeks, an ultrasound may be done sooner or later and sometimes more than once.
Ultrasound can help your doctor:
The U.S. Fod and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Institute of Ultrasound In Medicine (AIUM) warn parents-to-be that NON-medical ultrasounds such as those offered in shopping centers, are unapproved, inappropriate, and possibly even risky.
