Pulmonary Function Testing (Spirometry)
Pulmonary function tests measure how well you breathe and how efficiently your lungs transfer oxygen to the blood.
A spirometry test determines how well your lungs exhale. You breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a device that records the amount and rate of air your lungs exchange in a specified time.
Some measurements are obtained by normal, quiet breathing while others require forced inhalation or exhalation after a deep breath.
Pulmonary function tests are most commonly used to diagnose asthma, emphysema and orther causes of cough or shortness of breath. They are also used to assess the effectiveness of medication.
Your doctor will develop an action plan designed specifically to help you manage your own pulmonary health.
